      It is nice to know that this student survived the unfortunate ordeal.  He was discharged from the hospital and was sent home.

      But here is something that we should all think about.  Could the accident be avoided if the police SUV was traveling at 25 MPH?  Since the weather condition at the time of the accident was rain we could assume that the coefficient of static friction could have been around 0.5 to 0.6.  At 25 MPH the stopping distance would be approximately 35 to 42 feet.  If the student "darted out" to the street anytime when the police car was with in 33 feet (11 yards) range the accident would have been inevitable.  However the damage delivered to the student might not have been as severe.  Well, here is the result of what happened at the court hearing.  Please read the article and write a short comment about the outcome of this hearing.
